Erdoğan’s AKP has started to punish DEM Party’s Kurdish voters for their political choices in the elections of 31 March, 2024.
Erdoğan‘s ruling party AKP has dramatically lost its power in many municipalities across the country.
Many Kurdish citizens who live in Western parts of Turkey has voted for CHP, the main opposition party. As a result, Erdoğan lost against CHP in many key municipalities like İstanbul.
Now after the defeat, Erdoğan seems to be waging war on Kurdish opposition. Yesterday, DEM Party‘s decisive victory in Van municipality was canceled and the municipality is given to AKP’s candidate who lost the election by a large margin.
DEM Party votes in Van: %55.5
AKP‘s votes in Van: %27
Nevertheless, Erdoğan administration ignored the choice of hundreds of thousands of Kurdish people.
After this undemocratic move by the ruling party, many DEM Party voters expressed their dissatisfaction on social media. Moreover, some Kurdish voters are protesting the unfair decision made by the state authorities which are under control of Erdoğan. Now, Kurdish people who protests this undemocratic decision are being labeled as terrorists.
Under one-man regime of Erdoğan, Turkey’s judicial authorities has lost their credibility as they are also under Erdoğan’s control. Therefore, Erdoğan purges Kurdish opposition simply by ordering the courts and the judicial authorities.
By attacking Kurdish opposition, Erdoğan also aims to consolidate his conservative voters. Erdoğan doesn’t hesitate to divide the society as Kurds, Turks and Muslims, seculars so as to consolidate his conservative voters.
